The next Beginner’s course with Haverhill Running Club will be starting in…
28 September 2017
About the Course
The 10-week course has been put together with the aim of introducing you to running in a safe and enjoyable way. It will start with some gentle walk/jog sessions, and hopefully by the end you will be able to run 5 kilometres (just over 3 miles). Along the way you’ll be given advice on footwear and clothing and shown some stretches to help you stay injury free.
The course lasts for 10-weeks. We’ll meet each week at the Sport Centre at 19:30 every Thursday. The course costs £30 including Run England membership, and a HRC gift.
What do I need?
You don’t need lots of kit to start running, but it’s important that you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing. If it’s raining you may want a shower-proof jacket (about £10 from JJB or Sports Direct). You can buy perfectly good running clothing quite cheaply from big chains like JJB or Sports Direct (Cambridge Retail Park). You don’t need special trainers to get started, you won’t be running long distances just yet. A running shoe is best but cross-trainers like you would wear to the gym would also be fine to get you started. If you want to spend a bit more there are some very good specialist stores in Cambridge where they will assess your foot type by getting you to run on a treadmill (Sweatshop, Up & Running and Advance Performance all offer this service).
Who leads the course?
The course will be led by qualified coaches from Haverhill Running Club. They’re all experienced runners now, but they were beginners themselves once upon a time.
What happens after the course?
At the end of the 10-week course you’ll have the chance to take part in a 5K challenge event. This will be an opportunity for you to see what a difference 10 weeks can make! The running club has groups for all abilities and you can continue your running in one of those groups after the course. If you wanted to take up this option you would need to join the club as a full member, currently £25 per year.
“So a year ago today my sister suggested we sign up for the HRC beginners course. I thought she was mental and I think my exact response began with an f and ended with an off. However I could see it was something she really wanted to do so I felt my big sister obligation kick in. So I signed up, expecting to hate every minute. It certainly wasn’t something I was going to continue with once the course was completed. Little did I know I would actually turn out to love it! Best thing I ever did. Perhaps I should listen to my sister more often lol.”
