Being part of a running club can offer huge benefits to its members’ both physical and mental well-being, as well as having a sense of community. Whether you are new to running or regularly run alone, here are a few of the top reasons to consider joining a running club.
Motivation and accountability
HRC provides a supportive environment where members encourage each other to stay committed to their running goals. This can boost motivation and make it easier to stick to a regular running routine.
Structured training
HRC offers structured training sessions on Tuesdays, as well as social club runs on Thursdays, for various levels. This can help you progress steadily to achieve your goals, with warm-ups and stretches to aid recovery and help avoid injury.
Variety of training sessions
The variety of training sessions, such as interval training, hill runs, and long-distance runs keep things interesting and help members improve different aspects of their running technique.
Social connection
Joining a running club is a fantastic idea because you will meet some great people. Clubs are filled with like-minded people who take an interest in running and fitness, and you’ll make lots of friends in no time. HRC is all inclusive creating a sense of belonging, social connections, and support.
Knowledge sharing
Members are able to share their knowledge about running and you’ll get tips on training, nutrition and running gear. You’ll also be the first to find out about local running events.
Safety in numbers
Running with a group provides an added layer of safety, especially in the winter evenings when the darkness can understandably be off-putting.
Access to experienced coaches
HRC has experienced coaches who can provide guidance on proper form and injury prevention. This expertise can be particularly beneficial for those looking to improve performance.
Celebration of achievements
HRC supports an environment where members celebrate each other’s achievements, whether it’s completing a first Time Trial or achieving a Personal Best in a 10-mile event. This positive reinforcement can boost confidence and motivation.
Despite the obvious benefits, you may still have some reservations:
- You may be feeling nervous and overwhelmed. For instance, you might not feel experienced enough or comfortable in a new social setting. Doing anything new in life such as learning a musical instrument or cooking your first meal always has these feelings, running is no different. We can recognise these feelings. HRC has an all-inclusive and supportive atmosphere to help you feel welcome and comfortable. Also, for anyone new to running HRC regularly has dedicated Beginner Course programs lasting 10 weeks to slowly build confidence and ability in a relaxed and supportive setting. Many people choose to make that first positive step and join one of these courses.
- You may not have enough time. For instance, it can be easy to conclude that there is simply not enough time to fit running into our lives. The running club training and runs last for a combined total of two hours each week. It combines a fitness and social aspect in one as well as a regular escape from other daily activities and a chance to run in local scenery in the summer months on known and tested routes. You do not need to attend all of the training or runs, simply turn up when you can or want to, though of course, many members do a lot more.
In summary, joining a running club is not just about running; it’s about embracing a lifestyle that promotes physical fitness, camaraderie, and personal growth. The shared experiences and encouragement within a running club can enhance the overall enjoyment of running as a sport and contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.
